Bishop Herman College, Kpando

Department of Visual Arts

Welcome to the Visual Art family at Bishop Herman College! We are thrilled to have you here as part of a thriving community that celebrates creativity, innovation, and artistic excellence.

Departmental Overview

Since 2014, our department has grown from humble beginnings with two tutors to a thriving community of eight dedicated teachers and about 400 students. We have expanded our course offerings to include Ceramics, Leather Works, Graphic Design, and Picture Making — and we currently operate under the standard-based curriculum.

The department is all about helping students unleash their creativity, experiment with new ideas, and grow as artists. Our tutors are passionate about art and education, committed to supporting students at every step of their journey. At Bishop Herman College, the Visual Arts Department is dedicated to empowering students to harness the power of art in everyday life.

Our Team

Meet our passionate tutors: Messrs Attah Derek (HOD), Agbenyeavu Raymond, Azilagbetor Godknows, Amuvi Hayford, Babanebo Henry, Ako James, Assoy Fancy, and Miss Futukpor Jennifer.

The Department Aims To:

  • Equip students with practical skills to apply art in real-world contexts, benefiting society through creative problem-solving.
  • Foster appreciation for our rich cultural heritage through art history and criticism.
  • Share our successes and challenges with transparency and pride.

Our Goals

We envision training students to become self-employed, creative thinkers, and problem solvers. Our future projects include establishing Leather Works and Ceramic mini factories to produce innovative products — pending the necessary funding from stakeholders.

Challenges

  • 1. Lack of a dedicated Visual Arts studio.
  • 2. Inadequate tools and equipment.
  • 3. Insufficient furniture (especially working tables).

Successes

Despite challenges, our department has achieved remarkable milestones. Our alumni have excelled in arts-related fields, earning recognition for outstanding creativity.

Notably, in 2022, the Visual Art Department won the United Nations Peace Award-Ghana’s Logo Design Competition, showcasing our exceptional talent. We have also earned multiple accolades at municipal and regional levels, cementing our reputation as a hub for Visual Arts excellence.

Recommendations

The department appeals to stakeholders to support the establishment of a modern Visual Arts studio and the provision of essential tools and equipment to enhance effective teaching and learning of the arts.
